Kaiser Permanente Diagnostic Medical Sonographer I in San Diego, California

Under indirect supervision, performs a variety of diagnostic medical sonograms (such as abdominal and OB/Gynecology ultrasound examinations) utilizing complex ultrasound.

Essential functions: - Is responsive to the needs of others by maintaining a professional behavior toward members & coworkers & creating a positive image for the department. - Models & reinforces ethical behavior in self & others in accordance to the Principles of Responsibility; adheres to organizational policies & guidelines; supports compliance initiatives. - Identifies the impact of cultural diversity & lifestyle choices on patient condition & makes accommodations for such differences. - Demonstrates competency & understands the overall operational functions of the department to include all reception duties & cashier functions. - Demonstrates an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional & chronological maturation process in delivery of services to patients of the age group served (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric). - Able to assess data reflective of the patient's status & interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs & to provide the care needed in accordance w/ department policy. - Adjusts technical factors relative to the requirements of the study & the physical maturation of the patient. - Modifies patient positioning techniques relative to the patient's physical & cognitive abilities. - Always takes special care in handling, positioning and/or restraining infants & geriatric patients to avoid injury or excessive radiation exposure - Demonstrates competence & understands the overall operational function of the department to include scheduling of patient appointments by telephone, mail, or in person utilizing RIS. - Demonstrates competence in the operation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment, real time & mobile, to obtain quality diagnostic images. - Consistently selects correct technical factors relative to the requirements of the study & the patient's age & body habitus. - Consistently selects equipment settings & appropriate transducers in accordance w/ department protocols & patient body habitus. - Consistently processes hard copy images properly, utilizing automated equipment. - Properly & consistently follows specific infection control techniques relative to ultrasound imaging (e.g., cold sterilization of probes, use of condoms on endocavity probes, etc.). - Routinely manipulates transducer appropriately to obtain the desired images. - Consults w/ the radiologist or other clinician for purposes of clarifying orders. - Selects alternate or additional views appropriately relative to the patient's condition. - Does not attempt to perform an exam in any case in which it cannot be performed safely and/or properly. - Consistently demonstrates the ability to differentiate between normal & abnormal anatomy. - Documents clinical activities in a timely, comprehensive & accurate manner. - Completes & initials the standard consultation form & the radiology processing record accurately & immediately following each procedure. - Routinely documents patient history relative to previous surgery, childbirth & other conditions which could affect the ultrasonic image of internal organs. - Maintains equipment, supplies & work area in accordance w/ department guidelines.

Qualifications: Basic Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in a major medical center, preferred.
  • Experience with Acuson Sequoia, Philips iu-22 and Clickview ultrasound reporting package, preferred.
  • Current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification to include registries of physics, abdomen, and Obstetrics/Gynecology
  • Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited ultrasound program OR a graduate from a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with current ARDMS certification and one (1) year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in a major medical center.
  • BLS-C, approved course certified or must be obtained during the probationary period.
  • Competency in components of sonography as listed: routine abdomen, abdomen Doppler, small parts, thyroid, and obstetrics/gynecology.

Preferred Qualifications: -Experience working on GE Logiq 9 &10's. -Experience working on Toshiba ultrasound unitspreferred.
