We have an exciting opportunity for a NDT Engineer in our Advanced Aircraft Engineering group at General Atomics - ASI. Under general supervision with limited review, this position is responsible for determining and developing effective approaches for resolving a wide range of difficult Material and Mechanical problems focusing on NDT of production parts and on failure analysis of parts in service. Working within the Non Destructive Inspection (NDI) Department to investigate using various NDT methods such as Microscopy, Radiography, Shearography, Penetrant, Electromagnetics and exemplar Mock-ups to discover and document findings, communicate results to engineering staff and makes technical presentations as required. May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues. This position requires a self-starting, hands-on person to work with engineers and technicians to solve design, production and field support issues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform fracture/failure investigations.

  • Conduct hands-on investigations including NDT, dissecting parts, preparing samples for analysis, interpreting the results, documenting and presenting the findings in a timely fashion.

  • Determine Root Cause of failure on various reported field failures of Unmanned Aircraft Systems and components.

  • Collects and interprets data to support the appropriate corrective action recommendations.

  • Utilize, Troubleshoot and maintain test systems and instruments for nondestructive inspection (NDI).

  • Evaluate and advise design engineers about their drawings for appropriate NDI of products at various stages of production on machined, formed and welded components.

  • Advise on appropriate drawing information applied to welded joints in accordance with AWS D17.1 specifications.

  • Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required.

  • May represent the organization in providing solutions to designers, drawing specifications or technical issues associated with specific projects or programs.

  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Direct experience supporting a FRACAS (Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System) program is highly desired.

  • Welding Engineer or AWS CWI experience desired. Knowledge of weld techniques required.

  • Ability to operate various NDT equipment is required.

  • Previous NDT Level 2 Certification per SNT-TC-1A is required

  • Current NDT Level 3 Certification from ASNT is desired

  • In-depth knowledge of the theory and application of NDI techniques such as Dye penetrant, Magnetic particle, Eddy Current, Ultrasonic, radiography, Shearography, Thermography.

  • Understanding of aircraft structures, flight dynamics, and environmental issues is desired.

  • Must have a complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

  • Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.

  • Able to work extended hours as required.
