Summary

The Mental Health Associate works directly with chemically dependent patients under the supervision of the shift RN and Counselor. Daily routine includes assisting nursing staff with direct patient care, admission and orientation of new patients, general milieu management, patient transportation, and quality assurance tasks as assigned.

The Sharp McDonald Center, a licensed and Joint Commission accredited Chemical Dependency Recovery Hospital offers treatment for individuals with chemical dependency problems. Services include 14 bed inpatient detoxification, residential care, and day-hospital as well as evening outpatient programs.

Essential Physical Requirements May Include:

  • Walking

  • Standing

  • Bed mobilization (scooting / rolling)

  • Lateral transfers (bed to gurney)

  • Bed to chair/wheelchair/commode transfer

  • Car transfers

  • Lift up to 10 pounds

  • Push/Pull over 100 pounds

  • Carry up to 10 pounds

Hours

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Current BLS certification for Healthcare Providers issued by the American Heart Association

  • Knowledge of the bio-psycho-social needs of psychiatric patients

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide basic nursing care and mental health care to acute psychiatric patients

  • Ability to speak, write and comprehend medical terminology in English

  • Excellent verbal communication skills

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Some college course work in Psychology, Sociology, Communication, Nursing, or other health care related fields

  • At least one year of experience working in a treatment setting with patients that have acute or chronic psychiatric and/or substance abuse disorders

  • Able to provide a record of good driving and be eligible to obtain a California Class B license to drive patients to and from recreation and community support groups
